THE ROLE OF GROUP COMMUNICATION IN PRESERVING THE BONGKOAN TRADITION

Bongkoan is a tradition of eating with extended family, relatives and neighbors in Sidoharjo Village, Puring District, Kebumen. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Every traditional event in the southern coastal area of Kebumen is a special attraction for the community. Even for young people who have received the onslaught of external culture from gadget devices. Thanks to the role of group communication, they have the awareness to be actively involved in preserving local traditions. The aim of this research is to determine the role of group communication in preserving this tradition. The method used is qualitative descriptive. A clear picture is obtained, both of the process of implementing the Bongkoan tradition and the things behind it, to obtain a complete picture of the role of group communication and the developments surrounding it.
