Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between self verification and identity fusion, as well as the moderating role of perceived threat in this relationship among members of Nahdlatul Ulama. Self verification refers to the individual’s need to affirm their self-concept, while identity fusion represents a psychological state in which personal and social identities merge intensely. Perceived threat, both symbolic and realistic, is positioned as a contextual factor that may strengthen this identity attachment. Using a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, the study involved 222 participants affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama. The results indicate that self verification significantly predicts identity fusion, and that symbolic threat significantly moderates this relationship. However, realistic threat does not show a meaningful moderating effect. These findings suggest that when individuals feel both validated by their group and perceive symbolic threats from outgroups, their identity fusion with the group intensifies. This study contributes to the broader understanding of identity dynamics in religious contexts and offers valuable insights for the study of intergroup threat perception and religious group conflict.
