Abstract

This article reveals one of Indonesia's most famous scholars, Sheikh Muhammad Mahfudh At-Tarmasi (1868-1920 AD). He was a highly productive writer. The books he wrote covered various Islamic disciplines, all written in Arabic. However, some of them were declared lost, and many of his works have not been printed. Due to his vast scholarly contributions, Sheikh Yasin Al-Padani, a prominent scholar in Mecca from Padang, West Sumatra, who was influential in the 1970s, gave Mahfudh At-Tarmasi the titles of al-allamah, al-muhaddith, al-musnid, al-faqih, al-ushuli, and al-muqri. Sheikh At-Tarmasi was a source of knowledge for his students, who came from all over the world to study under him. Among his Indonesian students were KH. Hasyim Asy’ari, KH. Bishri Syamsuri, and KH. Abdul Wahhab Hasbullah, all three of whom later founded Nahdlatul Ulama in 1926. Some of his students from outside Indonesia included Sheikh Sa’dullah, the Mufti of India, Sheikh Umar bin Hamdan, a Hadith scholar from Haramain, and Sheikh Ahmad bin Abdullah, a scholar from Syria
