This study examines authority in classical Ulumul Qur’an studies and its demands in the contemporary era. The discussion focuses on the dialectic between classical authority in Ulumul Qur’an studies and the demands of modernity that shape contemporary Qur’anic studies discourse. The method used is library research with a dialectical approach. The findings show that the authority, or legitimacy, of an interpreter in understanding the Qur’anic text must be supported by mastery of the main pillars of classical Ulumul Qur’an, namely Asbab al-Nuzul, Nasikh wa al-Mansukh, Makki wa al-Madani, and Al-Muhkam wa al-Mutasyabih. These serve as a foundation that forms the methodological framework for ensuring the authenticity of the Qur’anic text and regulating the process of its interpretation. The epistemological paradigm shift in Ulumul Qur’an in the modern era, influenced by rationalism, historicism, and the humanities, has encouraged Muslim scholars to reinterpret key concepts in Ulumul Qur’an by using new approaches such as reformist-substantive, hermeneutic, and socio-historical methods in order to respond to the demands of the times.
